You meet all kinds of people in a hospital. My dad bust his achiles heel while playing squash and was in hospital for a few weeks. Next to him, a poor fellow had broken his leg - a nasty compound fracture. We found out later he'd fallen from a church roof trying to steal the lead slates off of it. He feel a good 8 to 10 metres before hitting the concrete path below. There was no police or security near him in the hospital - I figured the broken leg meant he wasn't going to make a fast getaway. This is a story back from the 80s, and I wonder now in 2011 - is there still this demand for lead thieves? It seems like a very strange thing to do. I understand copper thieves are the new scourge though. It's amazing what people will do for money. |

I cannot seem to grow a garden that will survive for more than a few weeks. I seem to be good at cultivating weeds and moss though! My garden path requires the use of a petrol pressure washer to remove all the detritus growing on it.
In terms of what I WANT to grow, I'm not talking about a vegetable garden but a plant and flower garden. I always start with good healthy plants and flowers purchased from a nursery to get a good start with the best. I enrich the soil as they direct me to, carefully mixing in the soil additive they suggest. I buy plants that are compatible in their water needs, so as not to dry out some or drown others. I spent days digging my holes to just the right depth, as indicated on the planting directions. I plant my plants and flowers and follow all watering instructions. For a few weeks my garden looks gorgeous, almost as good as on the pictures of the plants in full bloom. Then one day I will begin to notice the browning and shriveling of the plants it is heartbreaking. Before long I have a dead garden, even though I try hard to resusitate it. I once had hope that maybe it would come up the following years if I just kept tending to the dead plants maybe the roots were good and it was just in shock. Sadly that has not been the case as no sprout has ever reappeared. I have reconciled myself to a rock garden, you can't destroy it. Not as beautiful as a flower and plant garden but certainly alot of less work. |
