Making Changes to My House: From Messy Loft to Chic Study Area

posted on 7 March 2011

When I first moved into my house, my roommates and I were excited to find a cozy loft on the top floor. It was secluded from the rest of the house, which to us meant it had great potential for a study room. My dad works for a profiled steel roofing company and has always been of the opinion that we should not settle until we're completely happy with the accommodation we live in. So with that in mind, I pondered as to how we could work on this loft. Unfortunately, since moving day, the loft has been transformed to a storage area. Boxes, suitcases, and house supplies litter the upstairs and make it inhabitable. However, if given the opportunity, I would love to clean up the area and make it more usable. After cleaning out the space, I would paint the walls a calming lavender color and line the floors with comfortable, seek-your-feet into shag rugs. I would hang paintings on the wall and add a desk to the corner of the room that faces the sun. When the sun isn't illuminating the room, there would be several standing lamps to light up the room. With these additions, our room would be used in a more productive matter than simply a storage space.

How Does a Septic Tank Works

posted on 21 February 2011

Septic tank is a small sewage treatment system that is common to areas that has no connection to the main sewage system. A septic tank is a tank that is 4000 – 7500 liters in size this is a system that treats the sewage waste in the household. A septic tank is made up of four parts. The first part is the pipe connecting from the house to the tank, second is the septic tank itself, the third is the drain field and the fourth is the surrounding soil. Any one of these four parts malfunction the whole system will fail to work. A failure of the septic tank will mean an expensive repair and will contaminate the soil and the water. A septic tank is located underground and normally a septic tank operates the following way the waste material exits from the house through the pipes, which leads to the pipe to the septic tank. The septic tank is built in watertight that are made of polyethylene and concrete. The waste that is in the tank for a longer time would separate into three parts the solid to bottom of the tank and is called sludge the oil of the solid waste will float to the top and is called scum. The liquid will be filtered out of the tank trough the drain field leaving the sludge and scum behind. The bacteria and viruses of the filtered liquid will be further filtered through various layers in the soil.

Outdoor Fireplace Plans: First Priority Before Construction

posted on 16 February 2011

Having a fireplace outdoors is like extending an overall living room ambience with the sound, smell and heat of the surroundings. It is a great idea for families who love staying out to enjoy the day or like to relax in fresh air during the night. The fireplace is not just a decoration but also provides warm, cozy and comfortable sanctuary for families and friends. But constructing one is both a commitment and investment. Every aspect like location, style, codes, and materials are important considerations to outdoor fireplace plans. Choosing a permanent and convenient place to construct the fireplace is first the thing to consider. This must be located in a spot where the house wonít be blocked or no features will be obscured. The style also should be influenced by the surroundings complimenting the existing design of the house. Local building codes may affect the location, sizes and materials to be used. Usual fireplace materials include bricks or stones and cast iron or aluminum.

Install a Bay Window and Grow an Indoor Garden All Year Round

posted on 15 February 2011

By the middle of the winter here in the far north, it is hard to remember the beautiful greenery of summer. With snow on the ground for months on end, the chill of the season seems to seep right into the human soul. I recently discovered that there's an antidote to the winter blues: growing an abundance of beautiful plants in a specially installed bay window. Maybe even grow a little nursery under some instant awnings. The one I saw replaced a picture window on the front of the house, but a friend is planning to put one in the master bedroom. I want to put mine in the breakfast nook. With full-spectrum fluorescent lights and a warming bulb installed in the ceiling, it's easy to have an indoor garden all year round – even in the Northland. Ferns, vines, herbs, even flowering plants can relieve the dreary winter blues. I've been investigating a few makes and models to find a bay window with good insulating qualities and ease of installation. This time next year, I will be enjoying a private conservatory in my new bay window.
