Need to know if my employer is allowed my passport

I have started a new job recently and my new employer has requested a copy of my passport from me. Now i know a lot of employers are doing this now and an agency i was with before also did this to me. What i want to know is if they are allowed to ask for a Passport Notarized Copy to keep on file or not?. I have been asking around but no one really knows it seems. Everyone here has provided a copy without even asking but i wonder how safe they copy would be. It would only be kept in a filing cabinet in an office on site. Now anyone could if they wanted open this and take out the copies of everyone's passport. They do not even have to steal it, just borrow it and copy it and put the original back and i would be none the wiser. Do i have any legal right to ask my employer to keep the copy in a safe or something perhaps instead? I may write to headoffice.
